Still most of the next generation telematics systems are on the wrong path

Why do we want to integrate most systems tightly inside the vehicle? There are some strategy units at OEMs thinking out of the box. But when I’m discussing with planning departments, then we are back to the traditional supplier thinking where we have to develop and deliver the box which will be integrated into the vehicle. Just today: “The TCU and the SIM card needs to be integrated into the car.” The context was the hot topic around emergency calls.

My response. Think! Who needs assistance in a case of emergency. The car or the driver? Why we are connecting the car for the eCall? Yes, because of sensors, etc… But why we are not focusing more on an emergency call for every kind of accident when a human is involved in the traffic? Not only when she or he is sitting inside the car.
